SPOKANE, Wash. — It sure wasn’t pretty. There were plenty of ill-advised shots, rushed possessions, and a bunch of missed free throws, but Gonzaga (27-2, 16-1) still found a way to get past Pacific (17-13, 8-9) 71-62 at home for its fifth consecutive victory.

Watching the Tigers on tape, Mark Few figured the game would be far from a smooth operation. His prediction was taken to the extreme, with Gonzaga playing one of its rougher stretches of basketball this season in the first half.

Eight and a half hours earlier, there was a bracket preview held for the NCAA Tournament, where the Zags were listed as one of the No.3 seeds. One of the committee chairs, Keith Gill, shared that the group was seriously considering GU as a No.4 seed prior to a season-ending injury to Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, with the Bulldogs’ lone conference loss to Portland still looming large in the eyes of the committee.

Being in a position where it can’t afford to have another misstep, Gonzaga certainly didn’t get off on the right foot in this game. But, by cleaning up some things late, GU put the Tigers away to put another win on the board, remaining undefeated at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

While the Bulldogs are usually able to rely on Graham Ike if all else fails, he was uncharacteristically inefficient for most of the contest. The 6-9 forward began shooting only 4-of-16 from the floor, rarely taking shots on the block, which is his patented bread-and-butter spot with the ball in his hands. Most of the field goals Ike took were jump shots, taking a season-high six three pointers without connecting on one.

Pacific was doing a solid job of sending Ike bodies when he got the ball, but there weren’t as many aggressive attempts by him to get to the cup. Only grabbing five rebounds with none of them occurring on the offensive glass, he just didn’t enforce his will on the interior.

“I think he got duped into thinking that some of those shots we were making against San Francisco would be the same tonight,” Few said. “…Got to make sure we get him back to doing what he does.”

“Definitely felt like it was more gappy tonight, in the paint,” Ike added. “I definitely thought I could have done a better job of taking care of the ball and hitting shooters in their pockets, finding open guys, than I did tonight, and that’s on me.”

Saving his best for last, Ike knocked down four of his final five shots, including a couple of and-one opportunities to give the Bulldogs a big boost down the stretch. He wound up still finishing with 20 points, his ninth straight game reaching that threshold, which is the longest such streak by a Zag in the last 20 years.

Ike’s lack of production early had a domino effect on the rest of his team, as despite GU turning the Tigers over 11 times in the first 20 minutes, the two sides still went into halftime tied at 29\.

Gonzaga only had two points in transition, with Mario Saint-Supéry forcing three separate contested layups on the break, only making one of them. Multiple possessions concluded early without a pass and with a Pacific defender’s hand in the grill of a shooter, ending the period shooting 36% from the field. Not to mention they hit only five of their 11 tries from the free throw line and finished 18-of-29 on foul shots, a persistent issue for a Bulldogs squad that is last in the WCC at the charity stripe.

The Tigers were more efficient than the Zags and outscored them in the paint, but were unable to steal a win. Simply put, those forced turnovers, including five shot clock violations, along with seven blocked shots, helped GU get over the hump.

“\[Defense\] totally kept us in the game. It was what won us the game because we weren’t very good on offense tonight at all,” Few said. “…And that’s kind of how it’s been in this time since Braden (Huff)’s been out. I think we’ve became more of a defensive-oriented team, but we can do that, we can be that, and I think we’ve shown it.”

Timely buckets from Davis Fogle and Emmanuel Innocenti seemed to be the only way to break extended scoring droughts. The freshman Fogle was second on the team in scoring with 18 points, taking 12 free throws as he relentlessly attacked the rim and drilled some tough jumpers off the dribble. Innocenti continued to build on his recent hot stretch of offensive production, tacking on 13 points with two made threes in addition to being an exceptional perimeter defender. Their teammates took on their playstyle in the final 10 minutes of the game, getting to the line and capitilzaing off of defensive stops to pull away from Pacific.

Next up for Gonzaga are the Pilots (12-17, 5-11), but despite their unimpressive record, the Bulldogs will be on upset watch against PU once again if they post another performance like Saturday night.
