In an offseason full of unexpected departures in Spokane, the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ coaching staff became down a man late in the summer.

Jorge Sanz, who had been on the Zags’ coaching staff for the last eight seasons, took a position at UNC under first-year head coach Michael Malone. As GU’s former director of basketball operations, Sanz leaving for North Carolina is about as tough a loss for the program off the court.

Although the ‘DOBO’ role is still vacant for Gonzaga, it recently restocked to five assistant coaches under Mark Few. The Bulldogs added Bryce Douglas to its sideline staff, who most recently spent three seasons at Seattle University.

While Sanz specialized in building GU’s nonconference schedule and recruiting, particularly internationally, Douglas’ background is rooted in analytics. He has 15 years of combined experience at the professional and collegiate levels, while also dabbling in the international circuit.

Joining a staff that includes Brian Michaelson, R-Jay Barsh, Stephen Gentry, and Zach Norvell Jr., Douglas brings a different approach to analytics than what was previously in the building, filling a hole already in the coaching room rather than directly replacing Sanz. And with the inevitable retirement of Few on the horizon, Douglas was a hire likely co-signed by Michaelson, Gonzaga’s head coach-in-waiting.

A native of Tacoma, Wash., Douglas played four years of college hoops at the University of Puget Sound, a Division III program in his hometown, while double majoring in psychology and business. During Douglas’ time with the Loggers, they logged an 86-23 record, advancing to the D3 Elite Eight in 2006 and the Sweet 16 in Douglas’ senior season.

After completing undergrad, Douglas strove toward a master’s degree at the University of San Diego – a former WCC foe of Gonzaga – where he worked as a video coordinator and graduate assistant for the Toreros. Douglas received his first position as an assistant coach in 2011 with Whitman College, returning to Division II. There in Walla Walla, Wash., the Blues went 37-16 over Douglas’ two years on staff, the best back-to-back season record in program history at the time.

Moving on to one of the biggest schools in the country, Douglas was Duke’s assistant video coordinator for the 2014-15 campaign, which is when the Blue Devils went 37-4 and captured their most recent national championship. They knocked off the Zags 66-52 in the Elite Eight during their title run.

Following the confetti and champagne, Douglas got his first NBA opportunity with the Phoenix Suns, serving as a scout and analyst for the organization. For two years, he introduced modernized methods for scouting opponents, implemented templates for self-scouting, and contributed to in-season player development and on-court workouts. Also during the offseasons, Douglas assisted Team USA’s mini camps for the Senior National Team as they prepared for the Rio Olympics.

His longest stop was in Gainesville, as Douglas spent five seasons as the Director of Scouting and then Special Assistant Coach for Florida under Mike White. The Gators were NCAA tournament participants in four of the five years of Douglas’ tenure, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2017\. White took the Georgia head coaching job in 2022, and Douglas followed him to Athens. He was with UGA for just one year before transitioning back to his home state.

Douglas has remained with Seattle U for the last three seasons. The Redhawks finished his first year with a 23-14 record and won the College Basketball Invitational in Daytona Beach. Migrating from the WAC to the WCC before last season, Seattle U lost to Gonzaga twice last season but took the Bulldogs to overtime in their meeting at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

His contributions will be impactful during his first season in Spokane, as the Zags have relocated from the WCC to the revamped Pac-12, while also tackling another difficult non-conference slate that includes Duke, Michigan State, LSU, and Purdue. The unfamiliarity of these opponents creates new obstacles for GU this year, and Douglas could make a significant difference in the margins by better preparing the Bulldogs on the analytics side.

The biggest hole on the Zags’ sideline is the director of basketball operations, with the future face needing to be well-versed in international recruiting to deliver the value Sanz brought. But Douglas is an outside hire for Gonzaga who crosses a previously unchecked box for the program.
