It’s a setting that is almost straight out of a semi-fantastical sports film: the two top teams in the AL West—one a widely-hated longtime champion, the other the pluckiest perennial underdogs in the sport—initiated a series on Friday from exactly the same starting point. Neither team had been perfect, with room for slumping being given to both by the inscrutable gods of baseball. Yet the two sides had each entered on a high note: the Mariners having won 11 of their previous 12 and the Astros having just swept their Texan rivals to reduce the trio of division contenders down to a duo.

The three game set began with Seattle drawing first blood with a 4-0 win. Fangraphs has Seattle’s chances of winning the division at 75.9 percent, as just one more Mariners triumph over the next two games would give Seattle an all-important tiebreaker and guarantee that the Mariners enter the final week of the 2025 season with the AL West division lead. Even so, there are three possible ways this series can still turn out.

### Scenario I: *Without Pity: Houston takes the series, two games to one.*

After Seattle’s game one victory, it would take a strong performance by the Astros, but it is never wise to underestimate the team that has won seven straight full season AL West titles. Seattle would sit at 85-71, one game back of Houston’s 86-70, but it would really be a two-game deficit due to the tiebreaker. Houston’s magic number over Seattle would be five, which would take destiny out of Seattle’s hands and force the M’s to go on a massive tear to have a realistic chance at recovering the division. In the wild card, at least, Seattle would still be in the mix among Cleveland, Detroit, and Boston, but the final two wild card spots would go down to the wire.

Such a finish would be another brick in the wall of Houston horrors for the Mariners, as it would mark the team getting an early blow but still coming up short when it matters against a team that, for all its long dominance, is clearly on the long-term decline. An extra chip would be placed upon the Mariners’ shoulder heading into the final six games: to not only make the playoffs, but to finally knock the Astros away for good in October—and prove themselves in the process.

### Scenario II: *Eye for an Eye: Seattle takes the series, two games to one.*

This is the first of two good scenarios for Seattle, and all it would take is just one more win out of two. Everything from Scenario I would be flipped on its head. With a series win in Houston, 5-1 over the final week would guarantee a division title even if Houston went 6-0—and when one of the upcoming series is at home against the Rockies, the odds of a 4-2 finish or so look pretty good. Still, I wouldn’t be shocked by a 6-0 final week from the Astros, so Seattle would still have to take care of business against the Rockies and Dodgers.

Getting at least one of the wild cards would be all but assured, with Seattle’s magic number over the Guardians or Tigers (whoever doesn’t come out on top in that newly competitive division chase) being somewhere in the low- or mid-single digits. The M’s would have a strong shot at second overall seeding in the American League, only having to fend off the Astros in the final stretch and keep ahead of whoever wins the AL Central.

### Scenario III: *Ecstasy of Gold: Seattle sweeps all three games.*

I’m not sure this outcome would seem real until Tuesday at the very earliest. Not only would the M’s have a magic number of just *three* over the Astros in the AL West, they would also be in prime position to get the second seed in the American League and get the first-round bye.

If this happens, we would be in truly uncharted waters. The mighty Astros would not be completely out of the divisional chase, but they would be forced to win out and hope Seattle does no better than a 2-4 slump to end the season. More than anything, it would prove the Mariners to be ready to hang with the big boys.
