Landing their second commitment from a “5-in-5” player in as many days, the Gonzaga Bulldogs made an intriguing addition to their frontcourt late on Thursday.

6-10 forward Chauncey Wiggins, who played his senior year at Florida State, will transfer to the Zags for his fifth and final collegiate year. He brings an interesting dynamic to GU’s frontcourt as a floor stretcher, while also possessing outlier length akin to some wings on the Bulldogs’ roster last season. Wiggins’ announcement comes a day after Dayton guard Javon Bennett also committed to the program, leaving four official spots open in Spokane.

On Wednesday morning, a Georgia judge granted an injunction to 30 student-athletes from the Class of 2022 seeking a fifth collegiate season, one of them being Wiggins. Less than 48 hours later, he committed to Gonzaga, placing another dynamic piece in one of the best frontcourts in the country. He follows Javon Bennett as another fifth-year player for GU, and the program’s fourth transfer portal addition this offseason.

After WCC Player of the Year Graham Ike exhausted his eligibility this offseason, a question emerged of who would be Braden Huff’s running mate in the Zags’ frontcourt going forward. GU quickly addressed it by acquiring Massamba Diop, an extremely talented rim runner and paint protector. Then, the Bulldogs supplemented their starting bigs by landing Spain forward Izan Almansa, whose eligibility status is still in limbo, but could bring key rebounding and connecting off the bench for this team. Now, Wiggins enters his name into the fray, and based on his skillset and Gonzaga’s depth, he can potentially start at the three in Spokane.

Last season, wings Emmanuel Innocenti, Jalen Warley, and Tyon Grant-Foster played an instrumental role in GU boasting one of the nation’s best defenses. Since all three players are no longer on the roster, the Bulldogs’ shift to a more well-rounded brand of basketball can’t be more signified than by Wiggins’ primary trait.

Although he is taller than each of those three aforementioned former Zags, Wiggins stands out easily as the best shooter of the group. He is a career 37.5% 3-point shooter, coming off a senior year with the Seminoles where he knocked down 38.7% of his 3s on 5.8 attempts per game. Possessing a playstyle akin to an oversized guard in some respects, Wiggins can shoot off motion and on the catch. So for a GU team that finished with the worst 3-point shooting clip of the Mark Few era (33.3%) last season, his services will be greatly appreciated.

The Grayson, GA native started his collegiate career with Clemson, playing in Upstate South Carolina for three seasons. Wiggins didn’t get on the floor much his freshman year, averaging just 2.4 points on 8.9 minutes per game. But he still made 14 of 35 attempts from distance, showcasing his shooting process albeit on a small volume. During his sophomore season, Wiggins suited up in half of the Tigers’ 36 games in an increased rotational role off the bench, but still saw his playing time diminish down the stretch. That year, Wiggins averaged an unnoteworthy 5.4 points and 2.1 rebounds a game.

When Clemson reached the Elite Eight in 2025, Wiggins played a slightly more significant part in his squad’s success. Starting in 26 games, he totaled 8.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest on 43.8% shooting overall with a 36.5% mark on triples. But even with gradual improvements over the course of his Tiger tenure, Wiggins was never the focal point of the offense as imagined out of high school, then a four-star recruit and the No.4-ranked prospect in Georgia.

That changed upon Wiggins’ transfer to Florida State, where he led the Seminoles in made 3s (72), 3-point percentage (38.9%), and finished second in scoring (13.8 PPG). He took nearly six shots from distance a game, while making 61.8% of his 2-point tries as well. Wiggins also continued an upward trend in his free-throw shooting year-over-year, improving by at least 5% from each of the season’s prior, culminating in an 85% clip with the ‘Noles. His banner production translated to an elite 60.2% true shooting clip, as he starred in his role of drilling treys and using his athleticism to finish efficiently at the rim.

Despite his admirable height and 7-4 wingspan, Wiggins profiles more as a serviceable defender than an elite perimeter presence like Innocenti or Grant-Foster. He shouldn’t be viewed as someone who can be the Bulldogs’ point-of-attack player, but perhaps under Few and his staff, Wiggins could improve his defensive production. Never logging impressive steals, blocks, or rebounding numbers, there seems to be untapped potential in Wiggins’ game with his back to the basket.

Because of minimal playing time in his first season, Wiggins entered the transfer portal in the spring, hoping to earn a fifth season before the NCAA’s five-year ruling in June. He accepted a Summer League invitation from the Boston Celtics, and because the deal wasn’t an NBA two-way or an Exhibit-10 contract, he remains eligible for the NCAA. Averaging 7.7 minutes per game with the Celtics, Wiggins totaled nine points and six rebounds across three games, seeing less than a minute on the floor in his final contest.

The Zags are getting a versatile, portable shooter who can play both forward positions. For GU, Wiggins will be a lot like Warley, Innocenti, and Grant-Foster in terms of his lineup flexibility, but a massive improvement as a floor spacer. Of all the Bulldogs’ roster additions this offseason, Wiggins has the best track record of 3-point shooting by far.

He becomes the fourth player committed to Gonzaga who stands 6-10 or taller, and by also bringing reliable shooting to the fold, Wiggins is a valuable addition to this team, especially at this point in the calendar.
