Baseball was played between the Mariners and Angels this afternoon, which is a generously ambiguous way to describe the product fans had to endure watching down in Tempe, Arizona. This game had all the tropes of a sloppy, mid-February Cactus League matchup: balls lost in the sun, a pickle on the base paths that resulted in zero outs being recorded, and multiple emergency pitchers being used due to the 21 combined runs scored. There were six lead changes from the fifth inning onward and, naturally, the game concluded on an error-induced walk-off for an 11-10 Angels victory.

Nevertheless, for those who missed the action, there were still a few standout performances on the Mariners’ side of things. Let’s go over five of them.

### Miles Mastrobuoni

Mastrobuoni is in the midst of one of the very few roster battles on the Mariners’ roster and got off on the right foot today. The veteran utility man got the start at third base, hitting fifth for Seattle, and went 1-for-1 with a second-inning walk and a stand-up triple in the fourth. The Mariners like the positional versatility Mastrobuoni brings, so if the career .219/.279/.263 hitter can show anything of value at the plate this spring, it certainly wouldn’t hurt his odds of breaking camp with the club.

### Tai Peete

Peete has played all over the field in his young professional career, but the 19-year old found himself in center field this afternoon, replacing starter Victor Robles as a pinch-hitter in the top of the fifth, and impressed in both facets of the game. Facing Caden Dana, a 21-year old Angels reliever with major-league experience, Peete fought off a 2-2 pitch and flared it into shallow left-center field to drive Cade Marlowe in for the Mariners’ third run of the game. Later on, in the bottom of the sixth, Peete tracked down a flyball off the bat of top Angels prospect Christian Moore and made a nice running catch to save extra bases and keep a run off the board.

### Nick Dunn

Dunn, a 28-year old career minor-leaguer in the Cardinals’ system turned Mariners Spring Training invitee, went 1-for-3 in his first taste of Cactus League action this afternoon. That lone hit came on the 12th pitch of his first plate appearance of the day, in which he deposited an offering from Dana into the left-center field gap and just past the outstretched glove of centerfielder Jo Adell, scoring two and giving Seattle a 5-4 lead at the time.

### Carlos Vargas

Vargas had the cleanest full inning of any Mariners pitcher this afternoon, facing the minimum with a strikeout looking of Adell. The 25-year old flamethrower, who’s now the only remaining returning piece from the infamous Eugenio Suárez trade of the 2023-24 offseason, still has an unlikely path to making Seattle’s Opening Day roster and may very well find himself with a different organization by the regular season, considering he’s out of minor-league options. But today was a good start to the spring for Vargas, which is something that unfortunately cannot be said about most other pitchers who’ve taken the bump for the Mariners so far.

### Hogan Windish

Known best for his four-homer game in Double-A last summer, Windish got to a Ryan Costeiu offering on the outside third of the plate and drove it over 420 feet to dead-center and off the batter’s eye for a go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the ninth. Windish isn’t an exciting prospect and is ultimately coming off a relatively mediocre year in Double-A, but he can hit some impressive tank jobs and this was certainly one of them.
