Less than a week remains until the Mariners kick off the 2025 regular season against the Athletics in Seattle. With just a few games left to go this spring and most questions answered, here’s how their initial 26-man roster appears likely to shake out.

### **Starting Pitchers (5): Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo, Emerson Hancock**

Kirby has been cleared to throw again, but he’ll be unable to ramp back up in time to make the Opening Day roster after being shut down for shoulder inflammation on March 7\. Now that Logan Evans has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, Hancock is confirmed to get the ball in Kirby’s stead, though it may only be for a start or two, depending on how many rehab appearances Seattle feels Kirby needs. [The Mariners have officially announced](https://x.com/MarinersPR/status/1903120295256539437?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) that their rotation will be Gilbert, Castillo, Miller, Woo, and Hancock in that order.

### **Relief Pitchers (8): Andrés Muñoz, Gregory Santos, Collin Snider, Trent Thornton, Eduard Bazardo, Tayler Saucedo, Gabe Speier, Casey Legumina**

Troy Taylor (lat) will begin the year on the injured list, opening the door for at least one of the Mariners’ “pile arms” to break camp with the major-league club. With Seth Martinez designated for assignment and reclaimed by the Marlins and Shintaro Fujinami recently optioned down to the minors, the candidates to take that spot appear to be Legumina and Drew Pomeranz. But while [the data on Pomeranz’s four-seam fastball](https://x.com/pitchprofiler/status/1902476328852451677?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) has turned heads, Legumina has been the talk of the group all spring and seems the likeliest to get the nod here. Whoever it winds up being, though, they’ll have a small window of opportunity to carve out a long-term role within a group that is set to get crowded very quickly once Taylor, Matt Brash (elbow), and Jackson Kowar (elbow) are able to make it back.

### **Catchers (2): Cal Raleigh, Mitch Garver**

Garver experienced a bit of a scare after being hit on the wrist during a game on March 10, but testing revealed no damage and he has since returned to action to continue his encouraging spring in which he’s gone 9-for-31 with a trio of home runs. This will be the catching tandem unless an injury crops up or Garver forces his way back into a full-time designated hitter role.

### **Corner Infielders (4): Luke Raley, Donovan Solano, Jorge Polanco, Rowdy Tellez**

Tellez is expected to be added to the 40-man roster by Sunday when the first of three chances for him to opt out of his minor-league contract comes up. He’s been a mainstay in the Mariners’ lineup for a little over a week and the path for him to make the club has become clear with Mitch Haniger now a full two weeks absent from game action due to shoulder discomfort. Tellez will likely get the bulk of DH duties whenever a right-handed pitcher is on the mound, with some appearances at first base also sprinkled in.

### **Middle Infielders (4): J.P. Crawford, Ryan Bliss, Dylan Moore, Miles Mastrobuoni**

While the team hasn’t officially announced it yet, [Bliss has evidently won the primary second base job over Dylan Moore](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/two-significant-questions-mariners-roster-nearing-clarity), which pushes Moore back into the utility role he’s served in for most of his six-year tenure in Seattle. This now diminishes the need for a player who can handle shortstop duties whenever Crawford needs a day off, but the options to fill what is essentially the fourth and final bench spot on the roster will be dependent on how much — or little — the Mariners intend to deploy whoever earns it. Given the overall state of the roster and how Seattle has operated in the past, there is a good chance the amount of plate appearances that player sees on a per-week basis can be counted on one hand. In that case, the versatile Mastrobuoni looks like the obvious choice here, though Leo Rivas still lingers in the conversation as well.

### **Outfielders (3): Julio Rodríguez, Randy Arozarena, Victor Robles**

Raley, Moore, and Mastrobuoni are all well-equipped to see time in the outfield, so the fact there are only three names listed here shouldn’t be a cause for concern. Plus, the Mariners also have the likes of Dominic Canzone and Samad Taylor one call away down in Tacoma. The only question here is what happens with Haniger, whose $17.5 million salary is already a sunk cost for Seattle. The club will likely delay its decision to either keep or move on from him by placing him on the injured list at the start of the season, but how long that lasts and what happens once/if he’s cleared for baseball activities will be fascinating to watch play out.
