If Derick Hall wasn’t on the map for football fans before February, he certainly is now. He arrived in Seattle as a second round pick in 2023 to fairly little fanfare. That was the same draft where the Seahawks had two first round picks and used them to create what is now a Super Bowl-winning core of Devon Witherspoon and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Hall was their next pick, early in the second round.

Once he got to the team, he was not on the same level as players like Boye Mafe, Darrell Taylor, Uchenna Nwosu, and Dre’Mont Jones. He was well down the depth chart to start his NFL career. After a quiet rookie season in 2023, the final season for former coach Pete Carroll, he seemed to click more in Mike Macdonald’s system the next year. He ranked second on the team with eight sacks and 20 quarterback hits. It looked like he was an ascending player.

During the 2025 regular season, however, Hall once again was rather quiet, with just two sacks to his name. Then, the playoffs started. In Seattle’s dominant 29-13 win in Super Bowl LX over the Patriots, few players had a better case to be named the game’s MVP than Hall. His pair of sacks and two tackles for loss were just the tip of the iceberg of just how dominant he was in that game. He included four quarterback pressures and a forced fumble on his resume that night.

2026 marked the final year of his four-year rookie deal. But Seattle had seen enough to ink Hall to a new three-year, $42 million contract extension in June.

‍As seen on HBO’s *Hard Knocks*, Hall himself is quite a character that is made for the big screen. It’s obvious at first glance, given the length of his football “shorts,” which look like they belong more on the beach than the football field. Then there’s his custom, lifted truck.

It’s not just his truck, his shorts, or his new deal that sets him apart. He plays with an edge that pushes the limit at practice. At times, he passes that limit to the chagrin of his head coach in Mike Macdonald.

‍Still, there’s clearly a deep relationship between Hall and Macdonald, despite the perceived friction during this training camp. Macdonald even let Hall give Ernest Jones a playcall via radio into the helmet in a moment of levity.

This season of *Hard Knocks* has been a fantastic look at the culture of the Seattle Seahawks under Macdonald. There has been no better main character in the show to display that than Hall. He got into a fight with Brady Russell during the first episode. It was quickly squelched by Macdonald skillfully. Hall has an edge to him, for sure, but there’s also respect.

> The “Hard Knocks” premiere documented Derick Hall’s affinity for short shorts and the altercation he was involved in during Friday’s practice. He discussed both today, saying those involved hugged it out after the fighting. Mike Macdonald also said things have been smoothed over. Through two episodes, the player with the most screen time has been clearly Hall, for better or worse. Even as he occasionally gets under the skin of his head coach and the offense, at the end of the day, there is a clear connection and cohesion.

Hall could be poised for a big year in 2026\. The Super Bowl might have been just the appetizer. *Hard Knocks* is showing everything Hall brings to the table.
