Gonzaga basketball has been fairly healthy this season, but the first notable injury to strike the Zags this year has happened to their most consistent player, forward Braden Huff, who will be sidelined for 4-8 weeks after suffering a left knee injury during a recent practice, according to the Spokesman-Review’s Theo Lawson.

It is brutal news for Huff, a redshirt junior, who is tied with Graham Ike as the Bulldogs’ leaders in scoring (17.8 PPG). Possibly missing two months of basketball would keep him out for the remainder of the WCC schedule, including the conference championships that will be played March 5-10.

The tandem of Huff and Ike in GU’s frontcourt has been nothing short of successful in their first full season together, with teams needing to double one of them when getting the ball in the post, thus freeing up better offensive looks for their teammates. Now much of the onus will be placed on the final year forward in Ike, who leads the team in rebounding (8.6 per game).

Huff’s astounding efficiency has been the most impressive part of his leap in production this season, as the Illinois native is shooting 66.2% from the field. He is also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists on the year.

It will be interesting to see who will step up in his absence, as there has been a rotation in terms of players who step up consistently outside of Ike and Huff. 6-7 guard Tyon Grant-Foster has improved during West Coast play, with assertive driving and fearless rebounding. Jalen Warley has been the team’s “small-ball four” when one of Ike or Huff is not on the floor and has flashed ability to go coast-to-coast and be a solid finisher inside.

More could be asked offensively from point guards Mario Saint-Supéry and Braden Huff, or more shot attempts from deep out of Steele Venters and Adam Miller. Perhaps this even opens the door for more Davis Fogle, a true freshman who has shown extreme promise as a shotmaker off-the-dribble. Several different options are on the table, and with the Bulldogs already starting eight unique lineups this season, it is safe to assume that more can’t be debuted.

Regardless, the injury is devastating for a Gonzaga squad that has a slim margin for error for maximizing its chances of going on a deep run. The Zags have slipped a spot each week in the AP poll, now slotting in at No. 9, as they truly need to dominate their conference competition in order to earn a high seed in March Madness.

Even after starting 17-1, they will attempt to keep their strong season going without Huff for the foreseeable future, but the attrition is manageable with tenured head coach Mark Few and the tremendous roster depth at his disposal.
