The Seattle Kraken have tried desperately to make impact additions to their roster. Unfortunately, general manager Jason Botterill’s attempted trades for Artemi Panarin and Jason Robertson did not come to fruition.

But, there’s a new big fish available on the market. [Sportsnet’s Elliotte Freidman](https://open.spotify.com/episode/3FO0sppptIxZFoBChnGjbo?si=b6ecb69d60564d99&nd=1&dlsi=c6f514f960844534&ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) reported that restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson “prefers” a trade from the Detroit Red Wings. That’s a little softer than the explicit trade request that their former captain Dylan Larkin made in the offseason. Both are still with the organization, as of now.

According to all reports, Edvinsson has been a good soldier throughout this situation. The restricted free agent reported to training camp without team-supplied insurance or a contract extension. The 23-year-old waited out Detroit’s laborious and ultimately unsuccessful general manager search. He is now [in Sweden practicing](https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/detroit-red-wings-simon-edvinsson-returns-frolunda-sweden-amid-contract-talks-nhl-yzerman-horcoff?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) with his former SHL team, Frolunda HC.

The Kraken have started the season 2-2-0 and have a solid top-four defense group in Vince Dunn, Adam Larsson, Brandon Montour, and Ryker Evans. But when a player of Edvinsson’s ilk - a young, 6-6, and defensively sound blueliner who’s averaged over 20-minutes a night the last two seasons - become available, you have to check-in.

Trading for the 2021 sixth-overall pick would be expensive. Not to mention, Edvinsson would need to agree to sign an extension in Seattle. Considering the recent contract extensions, Edvinsson would be due a contract similar to Bowen Byram’s six-year, $12.5 million average annual value deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.

It’s also worth noting, any team [could offer sheet](https://puckpedia.com/news/october-surprise-how-detroits-edvinsson-delay-makes-them-vulnerable-unique-type-offer-sheet?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) Edvinsson. Any offer sheet over $11.9 million AAV would send Detroit four first-round picks as compensation, but that might be more than Edvinsson’s value. The blockbuster Quinn Hughes trade last season netted the Vancouver Canucks the equivalent of four recent first-round picks. Edvinsson’s value would be below that.

Here are two unique offers the Kraken could send the Red Wings for Edvinsson:

### **Current Players Trade**

*Red Wings receive: Jared McCann (extended), Vince Dunn (extended), 2027 second-round pick.*

Detroit, reportedly, wants to end their NHL-leading 10-year [playoff drought quickly.](https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/are-the-red-wings-open-to-rebuilding-the-rebuild/?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) Unless they get current roster players back, the Red Wings will be even further from that goal without Larkin and Edvinsson. Seattle could provide two impact NHL’ers to make this deal.

Both McCann and Dunn are on expiring contracts. If they agreed to long-term deals in Detroit, that would set the foundation for an exciting package for Edvinsson. It would be similar to the security the Calgary Flames got in Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar when they traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers.

Admittedly, it would be weird for McCann and Dunn to leave Seattle for Detroit. Given their respective divisions, Seattle is closer to a playoff spot than Detroit for the foreseeable future. And Detroit would not make this move without certainty that both players would re-sign. The Red Wings and Kraken both have the cap space long-term to sign both McCann and Dunn.

For Seattle, this trade would represent a changing of the guard. It would add a big addition for the future of the team, but hurt the team’s offense immediately. McCann is a former 40-goal scorer with five points in four games this season, and Dunn is Seattle’s top power play quarterback. At the trade deadline, both skaters would net more than a first round pick for Seattle.

Long-term, Edvinsson would pair with one of Seattle’s young defenseman like Evans, Ty Nelson, or Chase Reid.

This trade would provide a solid supporting cast for their Detroit’s current core, and could empower them to look for a future-heavy package for Larkin.

### **Future-Heavy Package**

*Red Wings receive: Shane Wright, Jagger Firkus, 2027 first round pick (via Tampa Bay Lightning), 2028 second round pick.*

If the Red Wings would consider a futures-heavy trade package for Edvinsson, the Kraken have a lot of options to include as well. Seattle’s most recent first round picks Reid, Jake O’Brien, and Berkly Catton would be the main core Seattle wants to build around. Everyone else, for the purpose of this thought experiment, could and should be available.

In his role, [Wright](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/seattle-kraken-berkly-catton-shane-wright-solid-early-season-development) has been impressive to start the season. His line with Catton and Kaapo Kakko get a lot of offensive zone starts, but also makes the most of the opportunities. [Last game](https://x.com/JoshFrojelin/status/2107696198798946495?s=20&ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com), for example, they positively impacted the game in every facet despite Seattle losing 6-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights. Wright is averaging over a minute more of ice time this season and has two goals and an assist through four games.

Wright is far from a Larkin replacement, but the Red Wings could use his help down the middle. Outside Larkin, the Red Wings’ best centers are Emmitt Finnie, Andrew Copp, and Nate Danielson.

The Kraken have a trio of valuable forward prospects developing with the Coachella-Valley Firebirds in Firkus, Jani Nyman, and Oscar Fisker-Mølgaard. While Firkus is the only one yet to play in the NHL, he was the highest rated by [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7141414/2026/04/03/seattle-kraken-nhl-prospect-rankings-2026/?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com) this offseason. Given the depth of forwards the Kraken have, Botterill could comfortably move one for Edvinsson.

Seattle has an extra first round pick in 2027 from the Oliver Bjorckstrand and Yanni Gourde trade two seasons ago. It’s top-10 protected. But trading for Edvinsson could force Seattle to include another substantial draft pick.

This move makes Seattle a more serious contender in the Pacific Division. Edvinsson could pair with Montour and move Evans to a more suitable role on the third pairing. Edvinsson also provides long-term insurance in case Dunn leaves at the trade deadline or in free agency.

It is a lot of assets, but even so, this deal still keeps the majority of Seattle’s core in place and adds a 23-year-old, top-four defenseman who should grow into a legit top-pair option.
